Healing From Within: A Beginner's Guide to EFT (Tapping)

EFT - Emotional Freedom Technique (aka Tapping)

EFT is a form of psychological acupressure. Based on Chinese medicine, EFT uses the same energy meridian points as acupuncture to treat physical and emotional ailments. Where acupuncture uses needles to these energy points, EFT uses fingertip tapping to apply pressure.

Research has shown that tapping can help a person access their body’s energy system and send signals to the part of the brain that controls stressors, etc. Tapping stimulates the meridian points, reducing the stress or negative emotion you may feel from an issue, helping restore balance to the disrupted energy. It is believed that the combination of tapping on these energy points and using a positive statement or affirmation can help to “open up” the energy channel restoring your mind and body’s balance.

EFT can be used for a variety of ailments such as anxiety (which I have used) depression, feelings of abandonment or child wounding to physical headaches, stomach issues, losing weight, addictions, and more!

There are technically about 16 EFT tapping points you can use. Here are 9 to help get you started:

Begin by tapping the karate chop point (#1) while reciting your setup phrase three times. Then, tap each following point approximately seven times, moving down the body in this order:

  • eyebrow

  • side of the eye

  • under the eye

  • under the nose

  • chin

  • beginning of the collarbone

  • under the arm (bra line for women)

  • top of the head (crown)

The Statements:

The positive affirmations or statements are just that… positive statements. While tapping on the meridian, the affirmation itself generates a release and raises the vibration. At first, the statement can be difficult, you may not even believe what you are saying but keep trying.

Start with identifying the issue you would like to work with. This could be emotional or physical. Next, find your statement. Here are a few ideas:

  • Even though I have this incredible fear of spiders, I deeply and completely accept myself.

  • Even though I have this fear of public speaking, I deeply and completely accept myself.

  • Even though I have this migraine headache, I deeply and completely accept myself.

  • Even though my anxiety is on overdrive right now, I deeply and completely accept myself.

  • Even though I have this anger towards ____, I deeply and completely accept myself.

  • Even though this disease is terrifying, I deeply and completely accept myself.

You can change the statement to what makes sense for you. What holds true for you. You can always change it and use an affirmation and tap. Such as, “I am a good person”, or “I am always in the right place at the right time”. Or, if you are dealing with something and need to talk it out, talk it out by tapping on each point with the ending statement being more positive, for example: "I am going to be ok", "This too shall pass, it always does." This is your healing. Choose what is best for you.

I have found that using the practice of EFT, consistency is key. Although I have tapped for quick fixes like anxiety, I have found that tapping every day can make a true difference in the system. Tapping can take anywhere from 2 minutes to 20. It really depends on you and what you are trying to accomplish.

Some of my personal favorite people to watch for assistance in EFT are Nick Ortner, Brad Yates or Mary Sise. (I am not endorsing, just stating my personal faves). I invite you to look more into EFT if this resonates with you.

At the end, I believe Emotional Freedom Technique allows YOU to work on healing your self - body, mind and spirit from the inside out. Happy Tapping.
